Pseudoscience Be Gone! New Auras & Chakra Pages

posted Mar 3, 2018, 2:21 PM by Evylyn Rose   [ updated Mar 3, 2018, 2:21 PM ]

I'm still working little by little to tidy up as mentioned before. Today, I did a little rewriting. For years (and years, it feels like), I've been wanting to scrap the Auras and Chakra page. They were unoriginal and trendy (the aura page was almost nearly nothing but pseudoscience). They also failed to fit into the theme of the website, offering nothing to tie the topics to Wicca and Witchcraft, which drove me nuts. It was like carrying around knick-knacs for no other reason than I didn't want to let them go because they reminded me of where I first picked them up. Bleh.

So, I finally sat down and rewrote them. The Auras page is now free of pseudoscience mumbo-jumbo with an explanation of what auras are and why they're relevant, though not a Wiccan concept. And the Chakra page is now original with an explanation of the role of Chakras in magickal practice with brief associations for the major seven Chakras. (I may add more on Chakras in the future. Don't hold your breath, though. It'll get done long after you've turned blue and passed out.)

And if you were a fan of the old Auras page with all its pseudoscience nonsense and are offended by me calling it pseudoscience, you'll get over it. There's nothing inherently wrong with pseudoscience and a belief in it if that's your thing, but it doesn't have a place on this site. There's a major difference between metaphysics (and the metaphysics found within occult and New Age practices and beliefs) and pseudoscience.

Metaphysics are those sciences that are not yet explained or can't be explained by current science limitations. Pseudoscience is the bogus stuff already completely debunked with no two-ways about it and any stretching to make it sound plausible is just wasted effort better spent learning something else.

Some things within metaphysics may one day be proven to be pseudoscience, but, more often than not, the metaphysics of yesterday are now the scientifically proven of today. Pseudoscience at best provides only a placebo effect, which has merit in itself, but I prefer not to lead people toward placebo-only areas of practice. That stuff is out all around the internet for absolutely free (or ranging from $19.99 to $9,999.99 just for fun). You don't need me to find it.

Pointing you in wiser directions,

Update on Vegetarianism in Wicca

posted Feb 17, 2018, 8:52 AM by Evylyn Rose   [ updated Feb 17, 2018, 8:54 AM ]

I've been doing some house-cleaning today. Just little things mostly, like catching a typo, fixing the layout, or removing a dead link. Along the way, I decided to update my Rambling on Vegetarian Wiccans. When I first wrote it, I was still very much non-confrontational and trying to prove that not all Vegans are militant-Vegan-types.

But the truth is, the more you dig and look into the lies and corruption of the animal product industries at large and direct ties between meat consumption in particular with horrible diseases (most of which are incorrectly attributed to sugar and other less-than-super-healthy foods and beverages and genetics), it's really hard to argue that being vegetarian (and vegan, really) should not be synonymous with Wicca and closely-related paths. If we accept that Wicca is a faith with values based on the premise of harming none, then a vegetarian/vegan requirement is implicitly implied, albeit not explicitly mandated.

The update reflects this thinking, but should not be considered as an attack on anyone's personal views or circumstances. Nothing in this world is a cookie-cutter (except a cookie-cutter, of course!). As the page says, they're my ramblings, my thoughts, only. No one entry is all-inclusive of every possibility.

I'll likely do some more housekeeping over the next few weeks!

Checking In

posted Jan 14, 2018, 12:01 PM by Evylyn Rose   [ updated Jan 14, 2018, 12:01 PM ]

Oh the sweet joy of internet! I had internet in my home since I was 15 years old. So having been without it for the past two and half years was... different. At first it was frustrating and unnerving. So I put unlimited data on my phone plan and lived. Once I got hold of a hand-me-down laptop, I was using mobile hotspot with said data up until late last year when it suddenly didn't really work (I suspect my neighbor's wi-fi was interrupting the signal). So I'm stoked to report I have fully-functioning internet of my own, a new computer (that actually works with the heavy demands of today's systems and speeds), and can actually feel the world open up. (Yes, technologically up-to-date computers and high-speed internet is a need in today's world. So keep that in mind next time you're getting rid of your old computer/phone or consider donating to charities providing this very resource to those in need.)

Now that that's out of the way, you should start seeing more out of me. (Probably just sporadic at first. Motherhood is such an interesting adventure!) I've added a book review for Channeling the Mothership by Jerry McDaniel in Metaphysical Book Reviews and updated my review of Living Wicca by Cunningham (Wicca Book Reviews). I have a couple others I'll be getting around to adding in the near future (I feel like I've said this before...), so be sure to check back for those.

And if there's anything else you'd like me to prioritize as I jump back in, feel free to reach out to me!

New Book Review: The Witch's Journey

posted Aug 16, 2017, 6:53 PM by Evylyn Rose

Because of my lack of updates the past couple years, there's a handful of books I've read that I still need to add reviews for. In the meantime, I wanted to share my latest read, The Witch's Journey: Cutting Cords with Christian Dogma by Elaanie S, with you. You can find it on the Witchcraft and Pagan Book Reviews page. This is a fantastic read and I recommend it for everyone, especially considering current events. You can read more of my thoughts on this title (and a couple others I've read recently) over at the Bewitching Momma Blog.

A Much Overdue Update

posted Jul 13, 2017, 10:50 AM by Evylyn Rose

I apologize for my sudden disappearance and noticeable lack of, well, anything. Nothing major planned right now and other obligations will keep me busy. But I'll be poking around, mostly doing stuff in the background. (Yeah, I'm going all ninja-like.)

In the meantime, I wanted to share this. It explains a little about what's happened and hope it brings some comfort.

Book Club Reminder and New Blog

posted Jul 28, 2015, 5:52 AM by Evylyn Rose   [ updated Aug 2, 2015, 9:20 AM ]

Just want to remind you that just because site updates will be slow for awhile doesn't mean there isn't a whole lot of good stuff going on.

The forums are always open for discussions and gets better the more you jump in and post. In fact, you won't want to miss the upcoming discussion in our Reading by the Moonlight Pagan Book Club! We've been reading (or re-reading) Scott Cunningham's Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner. The Q&A starts next week, so be sure to stop by and Chime in.

The new blog mentioned in the last update is up and running. Come check out Bewitching Momma blog today! The covered topics are broad (a week's worth of posts, and I haven't hit on all of them yet!), but there will be plenty of interest to Witches and Pagans. I'm also doing weekly readings on Monday, so be sure to keep up with them (and feel free to add your own in the comments)!

Delays and Future Plans

posted Jul 11, 2015, 1:46 PM by Evylyn Rose   [ updated Aug 2, 2015, 9:19 AM ]

Sudden and unexpected circumstances have taken Gabe, Brianna, and me back to the east coast. We're only just now getting settled and it's still a long way to go before we find our new "normal." Site and forum updates will be on hold for the time being. If you have questions in the meantime, feel free to contact us.

On a side note, plans are in the works for a new blog. Family and friends have insisted that I start a new blog, sharing my experiences and humor. It won't be Pagan-specific, but will likely touch on Pagan and metaphysical topics frequently along with parenting, business, relationships, etc. While I tend to keep MIM pretty serious, this new project will be more upbeat and conversational.  Make sure to stay tuned for more details on the new project. I'll be on the lookout for guest writers, so if you're interested,  reach out to me.

Adding Links

posted May 9, 2015, 10:19 AM by Evylyn Rose   [ updated Aug 2, 2015, 9:16 AM ]

Over the years, many of my favorite and suggested links have gone the way of internet death. I'll still recommend the occasional dead site or page from the Wayback Machine via the Internet Archive if it's really needed, but I prefer not to link to them. At some point, I had forgotten to add more links, so when it came time to do the site relaunch, our Suggested Links page is quite barren.

This bothers me quite a bit as the voice dominating this site is my own (it's my site, so that's only natural), but my voice is by far not the only one in Witchcraft and Pagan communities. As such, I want to make sure the Suggested Links page is full of various, quality sources of Wiccan, Witchcraft, and Pagan information, perspectives, and communities.

I've begun remedying this by adding links as I'm visiting sites I frequent or come across. I'm also open for suggestions for sites to add. I won't necessarily add a link based solely on recommendation, but I will definitely check out and consider any links! I'm currently checking out some Podcasts recently recommended with the hopes of adding a new Podcast/Radio Stations section.

Do you have any sites you particularly feel are valuable resources to those interested in Wicca, Witchcraft, and Paganism? Do you own a site that you feel is (or will be) an invaluable resource to the Pagan community? Please Contact Us to recommend links for me to check to out!
